20 January 2010

In recent weeks  a group of reps from around the country have written a discussion document, concerning the future of the CWU. This document is designed to "get the ball rolling" in terms of generating debate and getting people talking. It does not yet form CWU policy either nationally or locally.

2nd June 2010

The Gloucestershire Amalgamated Branch has today merged with the Swindon Supplies Branch. Lynn Simpson, Area Post Office Ltd Rep, explains -

"Swindon Stock Centre is now under the wing of Post Office Ltd after transferring over last year from Royal Mail.  The warehouse is based next to Swindon Mail Centre and is responsible for the distribution of leaflets, posters and stamps to all Post Offices across the network.

The CWU members within Swindon Stock Centre have for many years been members of an independent branch with their own Branch Secretary and Committee.  However at the beginning of this year, the Branch Secretary Roy Bowles left on redundancy and this lead to the opening up of conversations with regards the transfer of members into Gloucestershire Amalgamated branch. These negotiations took place between Chris Roche (Counters Territorial Rep for POL), Peter Bonadio (interim Branch Secretary from Swindon Stock Centre) and me as the Area representative from POL.

At the end of April, Andy Furey, the CWU National Officer for the Clerical and Cash Handling department,  attended the Stock Centre’s AGM and spoke on the advantages of becoming members of Gloucestershire Amalgamated Branch citing our good record and reputation for looking after minority grades.  The 60 members present at the meeting voted unanimously to join the branch.  On June 2nd the 80+ members were officially transferred.

Peter Bonadio is to be the Unit rep and will work closely with me as their Area representative.  Since the transfer Peter  has attended this month Central Committee meeting and as he is a new Industrial Relations Unit rep, we have supported his application to attend the union skills courses at the CWU training centre at Alvescot.

Gloucestershire Amal  would like to warmly welcome the members from Swindon Stock Centre into the branch and looking forward to building a strong and communicative relationship with them in the future."

CWU Responds to Mandelson

CWU today (Tuesday) reacts with dismay at the suggestions by Peter Mandelson to sell-off part of the Royal Mail.

Billy Hayes, general secretary, said: “It is incredible that the British Government which has lead the world in overhauling banks need another European postal service to rescue the Royal Mail. Especially one which has already been disgraced by losing sensitive data disks in the mail.

“This was meant to be a report about competition but Mandelson has ignored the damage done through irresponsible liberalisation and advocates more involvement by private companies.

“We welcome the move to Ofcom which recognises both changes in the communications sector and the failings of Postcomm to manage the mail market effectively, however we look forward to receiving more information on future regulation.”

Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, said: “There is no need to seek private funding from outside companies in a joint venture. This would open the floodgates for full-blown, damaging privatisation. Post is a key public and business service which must retain the protection and guidance of Government for sustainable success.

“We welcome the fact that our campaign to get the Government to secure Royal Mail workers’ pensions has been successful. The news that the USO has been safeguarded is also very welcome.

“We will be studying the detail of the report closely over the coming weeks and will respond fully in the New Year.”
